Control – Daily Prompt

Yesterday was a difficult day. I felt out of control. I bought a new Dell computer with Windows 10 and it is still blowing my mind. I like things the way I like them, so I can find what I’m looking for easily and Windows 10 is a booger at letting me have things my way. I started developing a migraine last night and had to set it aside, but thankfully, the migraine did not materialize and I only have a mild headache.

I still have a problem with the new PC or Windows 10 as it is. I do not like the bar across the top that offers a search, or fast browsing and I do not know how to get rid of it. I googled it and followed those instructions without any luck.

If you can tell me how to get rid of that bar I would greatly appreciate it. So far Windows 10 is not my friend, but the new PC is very fast and I’m slowly getting it organized.

I hear what you’re saying! I hated Windows 10 at first, for exactly the same reasons as you. Now though, I’ve kind of got used to it. Regarding the bar … I’m assuming it’s something like “Bing” or an “Ask.com” bar. If that’s the case, after a lot of toing and froing and several grey hairs, I right-clicked on the offending toolbar. This gave me a drop-down menu of all the toolbars. The ones that I had, had a check mark next to them. I clicked on them and the check mark and the toolbar disappeared. I don’t know if you’ve already tried this, but it worked for me. Hope that helps and I hope you’re headache is better!

Thank you! My headache is better, but only because I stopped staring at that stupid bar. lol I will try your right click trick, I don’t know why I haven’t thought of that, it is my go-to option on everything! I think I am just too tired to think. lol

Both and firefox. I run all three at once because I run two blogs, have 2 email addys and I like to see what everyone that isn’t logged in sees by running the 3rd browser. I know it is excessive.

OK, luckily she gave me instructions for all three. I hope I get this right.
First of all, she says you need to close all your browsers, so it’s best to either print out the instructions, or look at them on a tablet or phone or something.
First, go to Control Panel on your PC and click on “Uninstall a Program”
Find and uninstall the “Ask Toolbar Updater” and the “Ask Toolbar”. These names are probably under the “Publisher” column, rather than the “Name” column. She also says to look for, and uninstall anything that has “Ask” in the “Publisher” column.
Once that’s done, you have to clean up your web browsers.
Internet Explorer: Open your browser and click on the gear icon in the upper right corner.
Select “Manage add-ons” and then select “Toolbars and Extensions” in the right hand panel of the window.
Next, select all the extensions that are associated with Ask.com, such as Ask Toolbar (she said there may be several), IESalesProspectsToolbarInstaller_S-PV_tbr_sa_hpr_1.15.23.0, and askBar BHO, amongst others.
Click on the “Disable” button at the bottom of the window.
Next, click on “Search Providers” in the right pane of the same “Manage Add-ons” window. Ask.com will show up in the list. Click on the “Remove” button at the bottom of the window to get rid of it. Click on whichever server you want as your default server and then click the “Set as Default” button.
Next close Manage Add-Ons Go back to the gear icon and select Internet options” from the menu. Under the General tab, in the “Home page” section, you will see various URLs. Click on “Use default” to reset the browser to the Microsoft page. If you want to have a different page, change the URL manually after you’ve set the browser to use the default page.
I’ll send the instructions for your other two browsers in a separate message, then it doesn’t get too long.

It wasn’t that browser, I did not find anything with Ask in it. I may take my time and uninstall and reinstall each browser until I find which one it putting it up there. It is called Fast Browser, but I can’t find it when doing a search on the harddrive.

Phew! That’s a relief! I was finding myself writing stuff I didn’t really understand. 🙂 Glad you’ve got it sorted! She said that although it’s legal for it to come as standard on a new PC, they call it PUP…which is Potentially Unwanted Program. Sounds like they’re taking a liberty to me. Glad it’s sorted though. 🙂

I agree, they are taking liberty. If they want to give up something, make it something useful, like photoshop! HA! Please tell you friend thank you. And I do appreciate you helping me. I’m so sorry it was getting so detailed! I’m glad it’s over!
